Burt, who was born and bred in Somerset West in the Western Cape, teaches on the centre’s Postgraduate Diploma and MPhil programmes and provides research guidance to Master’s and PhD students. Walking the journey with them from a vague research idea to something tangible and empirical is one of things that excites Burt most about working at the Africa Centre. Burt also conducts his own research and drives social impact work at the centre. The latter has mainly taken the form of developing several photo novels to create awareness about critical health issues in local communities, such as tik (methamphetamine), diabetes and teenage pregnancies. Running is Burt’s other great passion in life, and he has more than one marathon under his belt. He combines his passion for running with his social impact work by supporting several HIV-related charities of the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.
