Prof Brian van Wyk

Prof Brian van Wyk has two decades’ experience in epidemiology and social science research as well as supervision of HIV and health systems in sub-Saharan Africa. He holds a master’s and doctoral degree in psychology from SU and completed his post-doctoral research fellowship in the epidemiology of HIV and tuberculosis at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health in New York. During his studies, Brian trained in health systems research and the social/behavioural aspects of HIV/Aids at the South African Medical Research Council and Human Sciences Research Council respectively. With a passion to develop the capacity of the next generation of researchers in HIV/Aids and health systems in sub-Saharan Africa, Brian has also supervised numerous master’s and doctoral students across the continent. He is currently a professor at the University of the Western Cape’s School of Public Health. His research interests focus on HIV and adolescents, with the aim of improving treatment outcomes for youth between the ages of 10 and 19.
